Bio-Oxidative Treatment

Ozone is nature’s purification system, reacting quickly to oxidize other chemicals and elements. How does it work?

Bio-oxidative therapies work in two basic ways. As oxidizers, they spur certain redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions within the body. T. Ramasarma, writing about the effectiveness of H2O2 treatment, observes that:

H2O2 has long been used medically as an antiseptic, disinfectant and oxidizer, but has only recently been found to successfully treat a wide variety of human diseases with a minimum of negative side effects. H2O2 appears to be involved in many intermediate biochemical pathways. Additionally, it appears to kill certain bacteria, parasites, yeast, protozoa, inhibit viruses, and oxidize immunocomplexes. F. S. and Archibald M.N. Duong have the following to say about H2O2 in the treatment of disease:

All of life's vital processes depend upon the presence of H2O2, and H2O2 is required in order for the immunesystem to defend the body against pathogens. The white blood cells in the body that fight infection (known as granulocytes) produce H2O2 as a first line of defense against invading organisms like parasites, viruses, bacteria and yeast. Some of the biological killing activity of H202 can be attributed to gamma interferon (IFNs). The production of gamma interferon by human natural killer cells and monocytes, is stimulated by the presence of H202 (2).

The possible health benefits of green tea are attributed to the catechins. These polyphenolic substances are antioxidants. EGCG appears to be the most potent antioxidant of all the green tea catechins, and, in some studies, it has been found to be a more potent antioxidant than ascorbate and reduced glutathione.

"Green tea catechins exert multiple biologic activities, involving potent antiviral and antioxidant activity," Dr. Silvio Tatti, now at the Hospital Clinicas, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, and colleagues note in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Given that genital and anal warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and that effective, well tolerated treatments are lacking, there has been interest in treatment with catechins ointments.

In their study, Tatti's team randomly assigned 502 adults with 2 to 30 warts to either catechins ointment (15% or 10%) or inactive ointment for up to 16 weeks or until the warts cleared.

In both catechins groups, warts cleared completely in roughly 57% of patients compared to just 34% of subjects in the control group - a significant difference.

Clearance rates of at least 50% were seen in roughly three-quarters of patients who applied catechins ointment compared with 51% of those who applied the inactive ointment.

Most side effects reported with catechins ointment were mild to moderate skin and application site reactions.
